Dr. Peter Mertens, born 1937, is professor for Wirtschaftsinformatik at the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg, Germany, and there a member of both the Business and the Engineering School.
He studied industrial engineering and taught at various universities in Germany as well as abroad. Before re-joining the university he was one of the presidents of a large software and consulting firm. Besides his teaching and research activities, Peter Mertens was engaged in several IT-projects with German firms of different industries.
His main areas of interest are:
- Information systems for the upper layers of management
- IT applications in sales, procurement, production, and logistics
- eGovernment
- Information Management including Offshoring & Nearsourcing
- Identification of Grand Challenges of Wirtschaftsinformatik
Professor Mertens wrote and co-authored several books on IT systems as well as on SAP’s strategic information management and supply chain management initiatives, some of which have also been published in the U.S. Moreover books have been translated into Chinese, English, Italian, and Russian.
Next to having received honorary doctorates from five universities in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland, Peter Mertens is fellow of the Gesellschaft für Informatik (German Computer Science Society), and Honorary Member of the German Academic Association of Business Research (VHB). He was awarded Germany’s Federal Medal of Honour, the Ring of Honour of the Vienna University of Economics and Business and the prize of the Schöller-Stiftung for his lifework.
